WHY GREAT GREENLAND WANT CANADIAN SEAL PUP SKINS

The text below originates from an recent answer by the Greenlandic Homerule minister for fishery and hunting Mr. Finn Karlsen to the Greenlandic MP Palle Christiansen from the opposition party Demokraterne (www.demokrat.gl).

The information has been supplied by Great Greenland to the cabinet of homerule ministers and is dated 22nd September 2005.The original document also holds detailed information about species, trade and prices, etc.

"Skind quality"

"Due to the difference in the hunting methods - see above* - this leads to a difference in the skin quality. A Canadian seal is caught at a relatively early life stage compared to a Greenlandic seal. Thus, the fur is young and relatively undamaged [on the Canadian seal]. Greenlandic seals are caught in all stages of their life, i.e. they are a mix of younger and older seals. Since the Greenlandic seal may have lived an ordinary life, this will  have influence on the skin quality. It may be damaged and with scratches. It is therefore more heterogeneous than a comparable younger Canadian seal.

The skin quality is very important for the price setting on the international fur markets. Thus, Great Greenland is classifying its skins in six different qualities depending on the colour, the homogeneity, density of the hairs, etc. On the salemarkets the younger Canadian skins therefore generates higher average price compared to Greenlandic skins."

[* the comment relates to the different hunting methods in Canada and Greenland described in the document.]

"Skindkvalitet"

Således inddeler Great Greenland sine skind i seks forskellige kvaliteter afhængig af skindenes farve, ensartethed, hårenes tæthed, etc.
